The popcorn ceiling will prevent you from gluing tiles and having it stay. I might suggest building a lath grid onto the ceiling, nailing into ceiling joists, and then adding the tiles to the lath.

Thanks, Ken. I will show this to my son but it sounds like quite a bit of work. It might be better just to deal with the popcorn and remove it once and for all. I was looking for a shortcut (also the tile looks great)!

Hi. It depends how rough it is. The glue needs to be able to stick securely without the possibility of the edges curling.

Thanks, Bijous. It is sounding like this won't work. Will either have to live with the popcorn or remove it. Ugh!

If you haven't painted the popcorn ceiling...like it is the way it was first installed...the popcorn comes off really easy with a little water spray and a scraper. No need to be too perfect if you plan to cover with tiles. just make sure you remove all dust.

I spent years removing the ugly popcorn in my last house. I finally hired someone to do the last few areas. He removed it and added a nice texture during the job. Not a fleck of popcorn was found after the job. It was worth it to me. I called a painting contractor and they referred me to someone that did that work.

I recommend to not do that.
