Could you move some of existing to fill the gap and replace with a contrast panels. eg: An all around border or a design in the middle etc.?.......
Do you have a closet that has the laminate flooring in it....use that and put another color in the closet....how about under the refrigerator? Other appliances that have the laminate under it? I never felt it was a DIY project but think a floor layer could help you.
I would get laminate flooring as close as possible to exiting. Remove existing flooring from an inconspicuous area, replace with the new flooring and patch the L area.
Thank you all for the wonderful advice and ideas. Will take all into consideration. Right now I have a wheelchair friendly rug covering area.
