We did the same, took up the wall to wall carpet off a concrete slab. Then we went to a DIY store and found some beautiful, non slip 12" square ceramic tiles (reduced end of lot). Great results.
i like the paperbag/leather look floors. not sure if i would be brave enough to do it.
