Has anyone else had this experience with wet carpets?

I’m visiting family and come to discover a sopping wet patch of carpet underneath an object weighing about 8lbs. At first I actually thought he had a leak and that the entire area was wet. When my son came to look at it he said that it was solely underneath where the item had been. I was boggled. Then he said it’s happened underneath storage containers and other things periodically over the past couple of years. He referred to it as condensation, which it may have been in the past. However, this time I had discovered it by stepping on the area barefoot. It was not my definition of condensation!
Does anyone have a theory as to what this could be? Has anyone else experienced this?

Condensation can produce a lot of water in humid climates. To prevent it, you need to put insulation in the floor so that the hot/cold junction isn't meeting in your carpet. This will rot the floor in no time.
I agree with Laura. Condensation can form under objects as moist air gets trapped underneath them. The moisture can spread by wicking into surrounding carpeting. Insulating the floor from underneath will prevent contact of cold air to warm air. Also make sure there is proper padding under the carpeting. Not only will the subfloor rot but the carpeting can get mold and mildew.
We pulled up all the carpeting from a slab floor while remodeling.
I was shocked to say the least, when after a few days I walked in to find standing water ...maybe a quarter inch...all over the floor.
So yes, condensation can do weird things.
