Go to thrifts stores and buy pretty quilts or sheets and hang on the ceiling to cover the pipes.

Yes, sheets would be the best bet. You can even paint the sheets or dye them.

You could use colored table covers from a party store or even shower curtain liners. Simply staple them to the existing wooden rafters. Very easy to take down or change and super inexpensive

I saw an episode on a diy tv show where the couples' funds were limited for their basement remodel and they painted the whole ceiling, pipes, and everything with a sprayer (white). Believe it or not it looked good. They were decorating in a modern industrial look . I think metal roofing would look good too.

Sheets look droopy/stupid like a college beer basement. I agree spray paint everything make it look industrial "Steam Punk' loft like. You /brush in all cracks and seams the same.

Painters drop cloths would be a good fabric to use. I have also seen where people used posters.

I have been buying groups of Dollar tree cookie sheet 2 for $1 still cheaper than HD real ceiling tins and I am using shoe polish to distress. I think I will use tacks to secure.

Fabric, whether it's sheets or curtains. I would not staple it tight, but let it billow a little between the joists.

I agree with the fabric idea (sheets are great) you could make it look like a tent.

You could strap burlap every 4 ft with narrow lathes. If your joists get as dusty as mine you may want to start with a layer of plastic.
