You could paint Wright’s over it use a realy fluffy roller
OMG that brings back memories...sparkly ceiling. My suggestion would be to consider installing beadboard over it to save on the hard work and mess of removing the popcorn. Ship lap is a consideration as well. Best of luck.
You can steam the popcorn ceiling off and then paint it. Google it
a super messy job. I sprayed a small area with water, let it sit for a few minutes, then using a wide flexible paint scraper, scraped it off. Careful not to gouge the ceiling underneath. You may want to use a spray on texture afterward.

Cally, I removed several rooms of popcorn ceiling when I was much younger. It can be a mess, but this guy has a great solution! He should get a patent on it!

It can be removed but doubt you'd want to do that now since you've already painted the room as it is very messy. One has to spray the popcorn with water then scrape all that off, then refinish the seams again to look like a new ceiling. You could also have the ceiling spray painted with first a primer to cover the water stains then I imagine you'd want a soft white for the permanent color?? Not a perfect solution but better than the sparkly ceiling, I'd think?
ugg, maybe i'll just move!
thank you all for the ideas and links.
