How do I fix sagging laminated floors?

I live in an old farm house with old wood floors that have been covered with laminate. The floors have soft spots in the high traffic areas. How do I fix this?

  • Means the wood floor below the laminate has rotted out or decayed from any number of reasons. You will need to take up the laminate, inspect and identify why, water damage, dry rot, termites, then fix that issue and reinstall the laminate.

The wood flooring beneath, which is probably tongue and groove, has buckled. The "soft spots" are where the floor is down solid, and the other areas have "raised. Originally, the floor was nailed through the tongue, so that the nails would remain hidden. If the nails missed, or split out the sides of the floor joists, then over time, they worked loose. If you can hear the floor squeaking, this is the sound of the board, riding up and down on the nail. Unfortunately, there is no permanent solution that does not involve removing the laminated floor.

Hi Ruth, both answers above are ONLY AFTER you have been under your home and checked your supports AND your floor joists! You can fix the top portion all day long, HOWEVER, if the structural supports are causing the problem, that’s exactly what you will be doing!
