Cover walls and floor with plastic drop cloths. Spray warm water on the ceiling and scrape off with a 6" putty knife. Use a cookie sheet or similar to catch the scrapings.

I just finished doing my own ceiling..spray w/water and scrape...the big job is covering everything !! Dust gets everywhere,,its messy. Then sand the compete ceiling..Paint and admire❤
There are two ways to remove a popcorn ceiling and that is dry or wet scrap. The best thing is to tarp everything as it is dusty or wet clumpy. You can use a wide scrapping tool found at hardware/big box stores or use a spatula or any wide edged scraper. It goes faster and neater with the wide scraper. The dry scrape method is what it says. Use the scraper right on the ceiling scraping the popcorn off in sections at a time. It does create more dust into the air. The wet method uses water with an option to use liquid fabric softener with it. Spray it on in four foot sections, let it soak in and scrape in off in clumps. Have a container ready to put the scrapings in for both methods, it will save on the clean up and the mess moving to other rooms.
First, you must make sure the popcorn does not contain asbestos. If it was built/applied before about 1974 it probably does. Asbestos can cause mesothelioma, a type of cancer that is making many attorneys very wealthy.
Take a small sample, and send it to whatever group in your state capital takes care of toxins.
To legally remove asbestos you need to bring in (expensive) experts.
Or you can do what I did. I bought a facemask made for toxic fumes. (not just the fabric ones that just slip over your nose that are made for dust.
I was told to mist the popcorn with water, wait five minutes, then just scrape it off with a wide stucco spatula. But the moisture soaked through the coating and softened the protective paper on the underlying drywall. Then I found out it was just as easy to scrape it off dry.
1- Be sure to have lots of drop cloths. It makes a helluva mess.
2- Be sure to use a file to lightly round all the sharp corners of your spatula/scraper so you don't gouge your ceiling.
After it's all removed you'll have to patch and smooth all mistakes/gouges with drywall goop and a smaller spatula if you want a smooth surface. Frankly, I would gladly pay a drywall expert to do this.
When you buy drywall goop make sure you do not get the type that hardens into something that is almost impossible to sand.
