How do you apply floor patch over cement with glue on it?

I'm putting vinyl floor planks on my living room. it had carpet glued with glued down padding. I'm planning to put floor patch over the glue so I don't have to take the glue off. how thick do I need to put the floor patch on over the glue?

I've never done this before but I would imagine you would just want to make sure your floor is level. If your just covering glue then it would make your floor un-level. I would think you would need to put it all over to make it level. It might be easier and less expensive to remove the glue.
