How do you fix popcorn ceiling that has a stain on it yourself?

Scrape off any loose particles. Use a small putty knife and apply drywall patching compound to the bare area. Use a stiff paint brush and stipple the compound to get the texture overlapping into the existing textured area. May take a little practice. Let dry overnight. Use a stain blocking primer over the repair and stains. Touch up with ceiling paint.

First scrape off all the popcorn in the area of the repair...at least 6 inches around area to be repaired. After repairing with your plaster and sanding, paint with stain blocker in area of water damage. Paint white then with the poporn that you can get in a box and add water to it apply with a small roller. Let dry. If rest of ceiling has aged and become discolored you will want to paint all of ceiling. You can buy the popcorn at your local "Do it yourself" store.

We repaired ours with the popcorn in a spray can. Found it at Lowes in the paint section. Follow directions on can. Be sure to shake the can and shake it some more. Practice adjusting the spray to match the pattern.

YES, PAINT KILZ OR ANOTHER STAIN COVERING PAINT AFTER YOU SCRAPE OFF OLD POPCORN, THEN USE THE SPRAY ON POPCORN. ITS SO EASY.

Learned this from a texture ceiling guy....if it's JUST Staining, but no lifting of peeling you can use a water and strong bleach in a FINE mist bottle..just very lightly mist the stain, never making it wet. You may have to repeat this many times, allowing for complete drying in between. NEVER make it wet! This would cause lift and peeling! I've done this and it worked! You will have to repair yours like the people previous have instructed....sorry for your troubles😊

KILZ also makes a ceiling paint in a can that you can spray up onto the ceiling.

The texture on my ceilings is a "knock down" , I couldn't use the spray and get the same look, I tried in the garage where the dishwasher had leaked for the previous owners. It was a sh&t show...you get the picture😬. But nothing sand paper didnt fix. I resealed the area and ended up repainting the entire thing. It is brand new now!

The most important comment here is DON'T GET IT WET. Read what everyone has said and take it all in. We ended up having to take ours down in because we tried to paint it and it got too wet. The spray product sounds like a good, but messy idea. Tape EVERYTHING. We did have ours replaced because ours had silver glitter spray on it and it just made my dining room look special.

Try fake snow that comes in a can. It covers it completely and nobody can see it. Like everyone says, don't get it wet.
