How do you fix squeaky hard wood floors ?

I have a split forard home that is close to 50 years old. The floors on the upper level squeak terrible. I can access the under floor of the bedrooms and hallway from the lower level. How can I lessen the severity of the squeaking without replacing the floors. Also the stairs to the lower level squeak. Is there anything I can do about ?

I have read that you can squirt or work baby powder int the cracks to relieve squeaking.
