How do you fix squeaky stairs?

Trends are stained and risers are painted. No open access. Squeak is in the middle not the sides. Just like most people looking for an easy but permanent fix. Thanks all.

The best way is to find where it is squeaking. Drill a small hole (1/8”) and inject glue with a long syringe. Then, use wood putty the same color as the stairs to fill the small hole. This is used in hardwood flooring to fix the same issue and it works very well assuming you can find the spot.

Thanks Jeremy this looks like the answer for me. Haven’t tried it yet as I’m doing repairs upstairs. Will try as soon as I’m finished. Thanks again.

Thanks Mogie. Yes it is a good site. I had read this article before but it is a bit overwhelming for me. But if the other suggestion I was given doesn’t work that will be the next step. Thanks again.

Hi Pam,. If there's the slightest opening in the stairs, shake some baby powder at the back of each step, some may go in. Make sure you wipe down the steps , so no one falls, powder is slippery. Aloha!

Thanks Ebbjdl. I have already tried that and it worked for quite awhile. Unfortunately the squeak has become more than this can handle. I have a couple more ideas now. Thanks again for responding.
