How thick does plywood have to be to stop squeaks in the floor?

I live in a 1969 raised ranch with the garage under the bedrooms and our floors squeak. We would love to stop the squeaking and know people remove their hardwood floors and use plywood. How thick should it be?

Hi there, actually they make specific plywood just to use as a subfloor. Its the right thickness and made specifically for the job.

You can stop the squeaking in your floors. If the subfloor is loose from the joist all you need to do is screw it down. Hardwood floors can be nailed down or supported from underneath to stop the squeaking. Most people put down plywood as flooring because they are on a budget and can't afford regular flooring. It does not stop the squeaks.
