To do a full refinish, you will need to sand down to the natural wood and clean. Then you can stain (optional), and apply poly that is formulated for wood flooring. Lightly sand, clean, and apply a second coat. If you want 3, repeat again but most flooring is a 2 coat. I have 1 room that is 3 and it is very shiny. It was the first we did and decided we wanted to go with only 2 for the rest of the house. I have red oak in most of my home so we didn't stain it because I like the tones after just poly.
To take it down to the actual wood, rent a drum sander, they are available at Lowes and Home Depot.
If they are too light after sanding, then you can restain them to a color you like, to bring out the natural grain of the wood.A polyurethane sealer is best to protect your floors.
Use a Sanding machine (You can hire them) to lighty sand all over. Vac up the dust, Wipe over the floor to make sure you leave no dust. when dry, apply sealer coats. Do not walk on until completely dry. Always start at the farthest point from the door, so you don't find yourself with nowhere to go!
I did all of mine with an orbital sander. Easier to use as all you have to do is keep it moving to keep the sanding even. A drum sander can make divots if you aren't paying attention. Really not hard at all just messy. Remove EVERYTHING in the room WEAR A RESPIRATOR not a face mask and cover any doorways as the fine dust will be all over you house. Rental places will rent per weekend and you can get a LOT done in that time.
You can do this yourself by renting the equipment but it’s a very big, messy, time consuming job, one that’s easy to mess up every step of the way with the sander, stain, and sealer. I’d consider weighing the DIY investment and results against having a pro do it.

You can rent a sander from many big box stores and do it yourself. You will also need some kind of small sander for the corners and edges.
