There are also options out there to cover popcorn ceilings. They make pretty cool ceiling tiles now that you just glue up, you could also cover it in plywood that looks like beadboard.
It is just a big mess. Place plastic sheeting down and have at it!
I'm going to spay and scrape.very messy.but amazon also has antique looking tiles to glue up.
It depends on how thick it is but if it is normal scrape in one direction and spritze with water on thicker spots using your drop clothes to catch mess.Lol Sand lite with long handle tool prep with paint or be aggresive and choose something bold that meets your style. Takes a little time but well worth the effort. Good luck
the wetting down and scrapping is what we have done but if you use an old paint roller that had been made wet the ceiling gunk will come off and you just clean the roller off as needed
