Put up beadboard panels. They are timeless.
1/4" drywall, pallet wood, bead board, sand wood there and paint or poly for an exposed ceiling.

Your local hardware store should have the "tin" ceiling squares. They are gorgeous and create quite a beautiful ceiling.
I agree with Sharon, but you can't use 1/4" drywall. Codes usually require 3/8" or 1/2" drywall.

Ceilings are a little tough. Consider hiring a drywall crew (it's not that expensive), it will be done quick, then you can finish it off with molding and painting.
