I use double sided tape and shelf liner on the backside. Works on carpet or hard wood. I tryout doing the corners and it works great on the heavier rugs, if your rug is one of the thinner softer kinds, you may have to cover the complete back.
There are pads that you can put under your carpet, places like Bed Bath carry them. Another thing you can do is get some clear silicone and run a bead along the edges of your carpet, let it thoroughly dry and voila!
Get carpet tape, I love mine!
I use a 3" webbed carpet tape to tape down the area rugs for my clients. I usually tape the 2 sides the direction of foot traffic.
