I need to install new flooring but my floors are uneven.

  • Maybe hire a contractor to even everything out before installing new flooring? If the sub floor isn't in good shape, anything you place on top will wear unevenly or fail - therefore costing more money.

We also have "wonky" floors. We decided to install shiplap as our flooring of choice. My husband was able to shim it where it needed to be evened out and it looks beautiful and level!! We will paint it with Rustoleum Chalky finish floor Paint and then seal it with the Rustoleum Matte Clear Chalked Protective Topcoat. We did this is a bedroom where there is not such high traffic.

Hi, Dorcas. As usual, Naomie Moore is accurate. You need to have that contractor or another check your foundation before any other work is done. Some settling can occur with most houses. You can use a level with a bubble gauge to check the slant of your floor. Anything over 5%, I think, does not meet city codes. (Find out the exact %.) If the floor is uneven because of patching, different materials, or add ons, then the proper contractor can make everything level and install the flooring. Since this is potentially complicated, do your due diligence with the BBB for your city and state, check licenses and liability insurance with the correct agencies, and don't pay in advance. Be careful, and be blessed 😇
