I desire a feeling of extra cushioning underfoot and want to know what I can put down before laying the laminate ?

Check to see what the manufacturer recommends. If too squishy, the laminate will ripple or buckle.

We just put laminate floors in a bedroom over wood subfloors and they have a special overlay they put down first. Wherever you buy your laminate, they can also recommend the overlay. We got ours at Home Depo. Don't forget the wood stripping that goes between the floor and the baseboard, really makes it more finished looking.
Many laminate floors ( you have to see which ones) come with, or have the option of a insulation pad already an intregal part of the floor; it's made onto the laminate Pieces
