Is it cheaper to have someone remove a popcorn ceiling or just replace

Removing popcorn is simple, but time consuming. A home improvement store should have a long handled scraper specifically for the job. Once scraped the ceiling will need a bit of sanding with coarse sandpaper, again a long handled tool is available. It goes fast, but makes a lot of mess.

It's easy to do, just messy. As far as cost, I'd say it's cheaper to have it done rather than replacing the ceiling. Get three bids. It's really hard to say as costs differ in different localities.

It all sounds so simple, but it can be a huge project and once in the middle you could have a real mess on your hands. If the popcorn has been painted over it is a bear to remove. If it is orignal, you will have to saturate it with water and scrape off. Then there is the quality of wallboard underneath. If it was applied around the 70's you may have to mud a lot of waves due to the technique used back in the day. I would definitely have a professional do the work. We tried it and gave up. I've tried several times to hire somebody to do mine and nobody will touch it. It's a VERY messy job and can be quite expensive if you hire someone.

I have done it both ways. It is time consuming and VERY messy. The pro (1 guy) came in and did 2 bedrooms, a walk-in closet, and the entry hall (popcorn painted in hallway). It took him a few days to remove it and put on a mild texture. Here was NO mess when he left, and I didn't have to move the furnitue.

I had a quote to remove ours and it was horrendous!! I decided I could do it myself and I did the whole house. First buy a good ventilated mask and a good scraper! I removed the furniture and laid down a plastic painting tarp. Have a good spray bottle with water and a ladder. Spray a small section at a time, letting it set until you can scrape off the popcorn. I bought the plastic sheets, one for each room and rolled it up for the trash. Yes, it is time consuming but well worth it! BEFORE you even start, make sure you will be able to dispose it. We were able to do it ourselves. Spray with a "little" water scraps right off. Make sure to have drop cloth underneath to fall on, messy.
