You can add tread covers in rubber with grip strips, add grip strips, paint and have glass beads added to the paint

Are your stair finished with risers and treads... or are they just plain plywood underneath?
Rubber stair treads... safe but plain and industrial looking.... carpet runner in the center of the stairs... probably should have professional installation..

There is some really fine grained paint additive to help prevent slipping. It's like a fine sand. I've used it in paint and polyurethane both and it does a good job. Since it's fine it doesn't show up too bad. You may want to try that and experiment on a scrap board to see if you like it or not. I think I bought ours at Lowes (maybe Home Depot, but I think Lowes).
