Painting and sealing a wood subfloor

There is old, nasty carpet in my dining room/eat-in-kitchen! Gross!!! A new floor is not in the budget for a few years. i'd like to pull up the carpet, paint the floor & seal with polyurethane. Any suggestions? Thanks so much.

What you have written sounds like you are on the right track. After you remove the old carpeting and tack strips, fill in the holes then sand everything smooth. Make sure there is no dirt or dust then paint with a primer. Then paint whatever color you wish. Yes, polyurethane on top - two thin coats work better than one thick coat.

Another thought would be considering doing a stain. They make stains in multiple different colors now and it would hold up better then paint. Good luck that's a great idea then trying to live with old carpet!

You ARE on the right track. Don't forget to remove all staples from the padding. You can paint or stain. I always use three coats of a water based polyurethane. Water based does not yellow over time.

Remove carpet, tack strips and any nails, clean thoroughly, paint, and poly.

Would using a deck stain work as well? Do u still need to apply it?
