  • Might be time to call in the pros, and this link might help you decide if you can DIY or get estimates. Hardwood floors are the best, or at least I think so. You can bring them back to life and get many more years out of them. Good luck!

Begin by cleaning the surface with a quality wood floor cleaner. Be sure to remove all traces of dirt so they are not pushed further into the wood.

Use steel wool to carefully rub over the scratched area. Only rub the scratched area, and always rub with the grain of the wood. Rubbing across the grain will increase the mark and make it more noticeable. Buff the scratched area with the steel wool until it is removed.

To help the scratched area blend in, feather the edges of the scratch slightly by buffing onto the surrounding surfaces. Keep the feathering to a minimum to avoid making the area more noticeable. Your goal is only to blend in the edges.

Next, rub a wax stick over the scratched area. This will fill in the scratch and help it to blend in with the surrounding area. Allow the wax to set up for 10 minutes and use a soft cloth to buff over the area using a large back and forth motion.

Finish by cleaning the area with a clean cloth.

Real hardwood is beautiful but after several years they probably need to be refinished by a professional.

Without having them redone, you may fail because it's not so easy to do. But, having said that, I've found that I can use "Orange Gold" after the floor is clean and dry to pull out a sheen you would not notice so easily.

Real hardwood floors can be refinished but it is not easily done. If they are only small scratches you can lightly sand these spots with 150 grit sandpaper. Then once you can't see the scratches any more then go to a 320 grit sandpaper and sand the spots to remove any marks made by the 150 paper. Always stay with the grain of the wood when sanding . You can use an orbital sander if you have one. Once you have the area sanded then use Minwax floor polyurethane be sure you get the sheer to match your floors (satin, gloss, or simi-gloss) Then apply as directed and apply at least two coats or more. Have fun if the entire floor needs refinished you can rent large floor Sanders at a big box store like Lowe's or Home Depot.
