Should I put vinyl flooring over tile?

As I continue with my kitchen research I have now confirmed that my flooring is not lineoleum but indeed tile. Thank you all with the previous question and answers. Having a party and helpful friends confirmed it. A friend of mine did suggest though about putting vinyl flooring OVER tile? I never heard this before and thought I would reach out to the hometalk fans for answers, advice and thoughts. I thank everyone in advice. Once again here is the picture of our TILE flooring.

Luxury vinyl planks may be just what you're looking for! Easy install and many of them look amazing. :)

Hi Linda. I'm Cindy. The house I grew up in had this tile in the bathroom. 8 people and 1 bathroom. Phew. Somehow we made it work. Anyway, we recently put peel-and-stick tiles over old ugly tile in our house. It looks great and after 2 years, has held up well. Start your tile job in the center of the room and work your way out. That way, if you have to cut tiles, they will be up against a wall and inconspicuous. Good luck Linda and Happy Holidays.

Caution....I put down Armstrong "place and press" tiles, several years ago. I recently, purchased a "steam mop." It caused the corners of the tile to "curl up." I have tried everything, even Super Glue. Nothing works. I'm getting ready to put sown a new floor.

I would get a good-sized sample of the vinyl you like to tape down and see if the tile pattern wears through. I think vinyl is great. Vinyl tiles, too. Vinyl tiles might be a better option than sheet vinyl, as it is likely thicker. Good luck!

  • Hi Linda, I work in a flooring shop & what we suggest to people doing this, is to get a good thick vinyl that has a felt backing & spray glue around the edges only, this would help to stop the tiles showing through, the other way is to get levelling compound mix & pour over the tiles so it would fill in the grout lines to stop the vinyl sinking into them to stop tiles coming through, hope this helps, good luck with your project Anna

My hubby just completed installing luxury sheet-vinyl over 1 ft. sq. tiles in our master bathroom. Even tho there's a separate toilet chamber room, he made a huge template out of enormous paint-drop-protector paper first, then cut the vinyl from that, all laid out on the driveway for cutting. He did place leveling compound in all the tile grout areas first for a smooth flat effect. Took all the baseboards off before installation. The floor looks GREAT & should hold up for many, many years! We highly recommend this.

These are good options. Make sure the product you use is level with the flooring it butts into. The transition needs to be level/flush with the existing flooring to avoid tripping hazards. Good luck and Merry Christmas!

The inter-locking, floating luxury vinyl floor would work perfectly.

I have vinyl plank all through my house on top of tile. Waterproof as the plank is interlocking. Should we want to change they are not glued down.

I would use vinyl planks it's thick enough to not go down into the cracks of the tile you have already and they go down very easy and quick and there are a hundred percent waterproof

The options for the luxury vinyl plank flooring is unlimited. Lots of colors and they look like hardwood.

I've been wanting to do this as well,my tile isn't as dated. But it's the ex's pick back when she lived in the house. I don't like the white floors never have! It's an endless job trying to keep them clean!! Especially with a messy husband, lol!! Our five boys (my three and his twins) are grown now but we have six grandbabies ages 7 to four months. So I need to get new flooring the most inexpensive way!!! And these DIYs sounds like the best option! Thanks!!!
