Hi Michelle. If the existing floor is wood, you could rent a sander and sand it down. Then put a sealer right over the sanded floor. Depending on the size I think it could be done for approx $100. Good luck Michelle.
What kind of floors do you have? I painted my bathroom floor and it looks great:

Hi ! You don't say how big an area you have or what kind of floor you have now . I bought a textured wood look vinyl floor planks that are peel & stick , from Amazon , that look amazing and were easy to put down , no special tools needed ! Just a carpet cutter or heavy duty scissors . i did this in my laundry room ( for $ 11 , the box covered 15 square ft and my room was small , I even had some left over ! ) we liked it so much I bought more to do our kitchen , entryway & both bathrooms !!! Note *** I bought the first box for $11 , but when I went to buy it again it was up to $24 a box !!! I just kept checking Amazon every day and I was the prices go up and down , when I saw them do down to $13 , I bought a bunch of boxes to cover the other rooms !

An orbital sander that you rent is your best bet. They cost a bit to rent but your only other expense would be the stain. You can rent them for a week or a day. Clear the room, seal off the room with plastic and tape, wear a respirator, keep the sander moving at all times that it is on and it will be done in not time. I use a rag to apply the stain so you have total control of how much is going on. Painting it on soaks in too much. Dip a small portion of the rag in you stain and begin to rub it lightly into the floor. Remember you can always add more to make it darker but once you have added too much you have to start all over with sanding. I did numerous floor in my 100 year old house and they were beautiful. I let each coat of stain dry for days just to be sure then did the same with several coats of polyurethane.
