To determine the amount of wood floor you will need, you will need to make sure to add 7-10% more to your 1700 sq feet to make sure that you have enough for cuts, corners, and such. So you will need to purchase around 1870 sq feet worth of wood.

To determine the number of boards, if you are purchasing from a box store, the packages of wood will tell the number of sq feet that the board covers. You simply divide the 1870 by the footage that the package shows it will cover. Example 1 box says it covers 20 sq feet - 1870/20=93.5 So you would order 94 cases.

If you are purchasing plank boards you will need to determine how much a board covers by multiplying the dimensions of the wood (Length times width - Remember boards are in inches, not feet.) Once you have the coverage area converted into sq feet you divide the 1870 by the sq feet to get the amount you need to purchase.

Probably a bit less than 1700. I would draw a rough floor plan including all areas to be covered. Then I would measure the areas myself and put the measurements on the floor plan. Round measurements up to closest foot and calculate square footage of each area. Don’t forget closets. Add the areas up. That’s how much you need. THEN the flooring you select will tell you how much square footage to buy. Depending upon what’s under the new floor you may need lining. Follow directions On packages. Whatever you do make sure you have plenty of extra boards (6) for mess ups etc.

The sq footage will also vary depending on how many fancy cuts are needed around doors, cabinets, etc. and if you're doing a border strip or extra piecing for thresholds.

Get a professional in to measure the floor space. You have to take into consideration cabinets and waste from odd cuts. The direction of the floor will also be a consideration.
