The steps are a bit worn at the edges, but I don't understand why the risers are "balding" How can I fix , without re-doing the entire flight of stairs?

The "balding" of the carpet on stair risers would be scuff marks if the carpet wasn't there. It is from shoes bumping the risers.

The risers are "balding" because the steps are probably rather shallow...meaning not much room front to back so people's feet are rubbing the risers. If you have big folks with large feet, this is the reason.

I would take up the carpet, and investigate different ways to finish out stairs. Some people would go for the quirky designs...even using ceramic tile on the risers... while others prefer the classic. Or you could purchase several carpet runners and fit them to your stairs with screws...this is what we did with the 4 steps up to our kitchen.
