Hi Shiela, as a general rule (though not always true) laminate flooring will last longer and is usually a better quality the thicker it is. Of course, that's not ALWAYS the case, but usually it is the higher brands, more expensive and more durable flooring.

Investigate and go for the better quality product, thicker does not always mean better as far as flooring goes.

    Here's some tips for you:

  • 8-12mm makes it more resistant to warping. Here's a link with more information:

here is more info and you also need to know if you will be putting it on subflooring or covering over tile or other flooring as well

Laminate thickness does matter. For one, thicker laminate is a bit more durable than it’s thin counterpart. There are more advantages to thicker laminate though:

    • Can etch in more detailed designs
    • Quieter with less echo
    • Installation is more forgiving because it hides imperfections in the subfloor
    • Feels like hardwood underfoot

Thats a great question, something I can learn from. Durability is impossible. We had a newly constructed home with prefinished hw floor installation that the refrigerator creased dented and dog nails tore up. It had not happen in subsequent residences.

We just rolled our refrigerator recently for repairs and no marks on the floor. Best wish with your diy.

Hi! Thicker is usually best for floors. Depending on the floor you are installing on, you can use a flooring that already has a cushion applied or install the cushion first. Also, you want the old floor as smooth and level as possible to eliminate the new floor showing any underlying problems. Good luck!

  • Usual laminate flooring is between 6-12mm thick, however if you can find thicker than 12mm, then that is an inaccurate measurement which may probably include an attached padding. And if you still want the best quality then you should go with 10 or 12mm.

I'm not so sure thickness matters. I would just look at the overall durability. And who ever you purchase it from would be able to help you make that decision.

I had 12mm installed in 2012. It still looks brand new, no scratches, no lifting. And I have a dog and children. Look for the new laminates that are also water proof. Even look at the new LVP [luxury vinyl planks] Those are 100% waterproof and scratch proof.

8 to 12 mm is best in general.

Hi Sheila, the thicker the better. It's more durable and forgiving when it comes to laying it down.

Whatever style you choose, resist the urge to settle for the cheapest price.

All laminate flooring is Not created equally.

From personal experience, I know that low priced laminate flooring is cheap quality that chips and disintegrates quickly simply because it has no durability. It also cracks and splits more readily during the cutting process compared with higher end lines, which leads to more wastage, which often results in the need to buy more to finish the job.

As it is the same amount of labour to install cheap or better quality laminate, think about the longevity of your efforts and purchase a higher end product.
