What’s the best way to remove staples from an old hardwood floor?
These are old rounded nails where the two ends are bent like “U” and driven into the hardwood floor. They are very close to the floor and difficult to pry up. Is there a preferred tool for such work?

I had this same issue and I used an upholstery staple remover. There are many different kinds and you can find them at improvement stores or on Amazon.
I used a flat head screw driver, slid it under the staples and moved the screw driver back and forth until the staples popped up and you could use needle nose pliers to pull them out.
Another vote for an upholstery staple remover. I have 2 types. One looks like a screwdriver with a V on the end. The other is this one: https://www.amazon.com/MROCO-Remover-Strength-Removing-Furniture/dp/B0769WWDGD/ref=sr_1_8?keywords=upholstery+staple+remover&qid=1562071405&s=gateway&sr=8-8
Use gloves to keep your hands from hurting. Use pliers for staples that break. Use a rolling motion with the tools to pull out staples without breaking them. It takes a while, but it's worth it.
There is a special tool for this. Ask at DIY store.
