Which direction for the wood grain putting up a ship lap ceiling?

We are going to put ship lap on our kitchen ceiling - we have a Pergo woodgrain floor - should the shiplap 'boards' go the same direction as the 'boards' in the floor (length), or can we go the width of the kitchen?
