There are so many tutorials on how to personalize doormats but most of them has always intimidated me in wanting to make my own. Then I came across this particular method that uses freezer paper and flex seal liquid rubber. It actually inspired me to finally make one myself. I hope you will also be motivated to make it yourself.

All three materials (coir doormat, freezer paper & flex seal) were purchased from Amazon last summer, but the price of that particular doormat has gone up since. Ikea stores has cheaper ones for $7.99, and you probably already own freezer paper and flex seal.  Other tools used were a cutting machine, household iron and thumbtacks.

Step 1: Make your stencil design in Cricut Design Space.

Step 2: Proceed to ‘Make It’, choose the 12x24 material size, and position the wordings in the middle.

Step 3: With the SHINY SIDE DOWN, stick a cut sheet of freezer paper onto your cutting mat.

Step 4: Choose the ‘Freezer Paper’ setting for your base material then ‘Continue’ to cut.

Step 5: Weed out the letters being careful not to lose the insides.

Step 6: Adhere the stencil onto your doormat with a hot iron. Thumbtacks help keep loose areas intact.

Step 7: Cover all areas you don’t want spray painted and do 1 or 2 coats of flex seal over your design.

Step 8: Peel off freezer paper and let dry.

The finished product is just perfect to me. Not intimidating at all to work on. I definitely want to make more of this. Great for gifting!

NOTES:

- The flex seal liquid rubber is the key ingredient in preventing paint bleed.

- If you prefer ready-made/store-bought stencils, use either duct tape or Krylon Easy-Tack Repositionable Adhesive spray to attach your stencil to your doormat.

Nice project. I don't have a Cricut but I do make stencils on freezer paper for t shirts and jackets.

Thank you. That’s so cool that you’re able to make them without a cutting machine. . I don’t think I can manage without one.

I love this idea. I have a nice stencil for my front doormat that my mother made for me years ago but I never got around to doing it. I’m now glad I didn’t because I would have simply used spray paint and wouldn’t have really known the steps to take to make it come out right. With your tutorial, I’m getting started immediately! Thank you.
