Spring is the perfect time to start a family garden. It gets everyone outdoors, teaches important skills, and encourages healthy eating. These tips for gardening with kids will make the whole thing fun.
If you're a beginner, starting a garden {especially with young helpers} can sound like a lot of work. A bountiful garden takes a lot of time and energy.


Start small and use these five tips to plan a garden that everyone can enjoy.
1. Pick something easy.


It can be frustrating to plant something and have zero results. Your kids will quickly lose interest if "nothing is happening." Whether you want flowers or veggies, choose one that is easy to care for and will produce a big bounty. Cucumbers are a good choice.


2. Choose something pretty or tasty.


Kids want a reward that's worth the hard work. Plant a flower that will have spectacular blooms or a fruit or vegetable that they love to eat.
3. Keep those plant tags.


Even if you're only growing one thing, hang onto the tags that came with your plant or the seed packet. Not only does it have handy information on watering and sunlight, it also makes a great garden marker.


4. Get messy.


Gardening is an essentially messy task. Most kids love getting messy and digging in the dirt, so let them go all-out.
5. Use a calendar.


Keep track of what you planted and when so that you know when to expect sprouts, leaves, and the big reward - pretty flowers or fresh produce. This printable home garden planning chart has room for all the details you need to know.
