Growing Sunflowers
I enjoy growing sunflowers every year. They're one of the fastest-growing plants, and they're also excellent for teaching about the life cycle and facts. They also include activities for both children and adults, such as a competition to see who can grow the tallest plant or the largest flower.
1. Set up the pots
Prepare the containers in which you will grow your sunflowers. You should start them in 7.5cm pots if possible. If you're reusing ones from last year, be sure they're in good condition.
2. Fill up the plants with some compost
Fill the containers with multipurpose compost. Make careful to allow 1cm of space at the top of the pot for extra compost later. It'll be OK just below the lip.
3. Insert the seeds into the compost
In the soil, plant a sunflower seed. Down the pointy edge. Give it a little push with your finger to help it go into the ground. Sprinkle some compost over the top.
4. Watering
Finally, give your sunflowers a good watering before putting them back in the tray.
5. Place the pots on a windowsill
With the pots on a nice warm windowsill, it won’t be long before you see the seedlings coming through.
Once the risk of frost has passed outside, you simply need to plant them where they are going to flower.
