The Garden Frog with C Renee on Sep 22, 2016I am going to say leave them until spring. The bugs and insects use the spent stems for homes and the seeds are food for the birds. I leave my perennials alone until late winter/early spring and it may look messy but I garden for nature. Good luck whatever you decide.Helpful Reply

Annie Sue on Sep 23, 2016If you live in a cold snowy climate, it's best to leave them till spring since they'll trap snow and keep them from winter kill. The one exception I know of is peonies. They should be cut back after the first frost.Helpful Reply
