    After the first freeze

I agree, after the first freeze.

I cut mine back when ever they are done blooming.
  • I am going to say leave them until spring. The bugs and insects use the spent stems for homes and the seeds are food for the birds. I leave my perennials alone until late winter/early spring and it may look messy but I garden for nature. Good luck whatever you decide.

That's what I do too. I'm not here in the winter to feed the birds so leaving the seed heads on makes me feel less guilty.

Cut down now if faded and yellowing...October is in days after all...only ones I leave alone are Hydrangea, Autumn Joy Sedum and Mums.

I'm in Connecticut, wait for first frost, then clean beds of cuttings.

Here in north Florida we get warm days during the winter that sometimes spurs growth so I wait until early Spring.

    It depends on the perennial

If you live in a cold snowy climate, it's best to leave them till spring since they'll trap snow and keep them from winter kill. The one exception I know of is peonies. They should be cut back after the first frost.

The only addendum I would make to your comments is to be sure there is no mold or disease on the perennials. If so, definitely cut back your perennials before the snow flies so the disease doesn't overwinter and reappear in the Spring. Another added benefit of leaving the rudbeckia and echinacea is that their seed heads will feed birds through the winter. There are others that will also provide a food source for birds.
