Late Fall
In late winter or early spring, these shrubs can be cut all the way back to the ground. Smooth hydrangeas will produce much larger blooms if pruned hard like this each year, but many gardeners opt for smaller blooms on sturdier branches.
Some hydrangeas grow flowers from new growth and some from old growth. It's best to find out which you have. I found out the hard way that mine produces flowers on old growth. Maybe mine will flower next year.
If you cut Big Leaf Shade Hydrangeas in the fall, or winter, you will have few to no blooms next yer. Only cut out dead wood. Those big pink, or blue hydranges need to be pruned right after blooming, unless they are "Endess Summer", or "Forever and Ever".
