How could I plant flower bulbs in large planters in the fall?
I have a number of giant pot-planters (mostly are resin/poly due to the xxxlarge size) . I'd like to put bulbs in them to bloom in the spring, but the pots will not be protected/covered due to their size and location. Would they "winter over" okay, or should I cover them (mulch, or?) for added protection? When is the best time to plant? Just ordinary soil mix, no additives, right? BTW, I live in NC. thank you for your advice!

It would depend on the type of bulbs you plant. I'm in 7a (AL) and I've had hostas, lavender, and succulents survive without bringing them in. Just in my yard in large pots. My aloe plant did not make it last winter but did 2 years before that. So pick things that are tolerant of your average low temperature for the winter.
when you plant bulbs outside in the ground they are covered with dirt, so just cover the bulbs in your pots with dirt/potting soil

If you have a garage or dry space downstairs, I would move them there during the winter. Otherwise, you could experiment with one of them this year and give it a nice layer of mulch/leaves on top to keep it warm. Maybe even move it closer to the outside of the house and line it up against the back wall of the house so it may not get as much rain.
Hi Babbette, hope this link helps you out, I think you still need to protect them, maybe with tarps
