How do I plant a butterfly garden?

My dog Sofia died 2 years ago and the day before she died a red admiral landed on her back and stayed there for a few minutes. Sofia died the next day. After we came home from the vet the day she died the red admiral was flying around our porch window like crazy as if to say Hello I am Sofia and I am ok. So I am starting a butterfly garden for her. Which plants will attract them?

That is an awesome idea Kelly, I do know that they have seedlings like a mixed flower that attracts butterfly and hummingbirds. I did get the seed packs at local stores that say right on the pack. I just told my husband about Sofia, we have 2 dogs Baboo and Yeti, and about 2 years ago Cassidy went our older girl had passed and hope you do not mind but I love your idea. Would love to incorporate this along with her paw print stepping stone. I am not very creative or never was really a green thumb. I did get the seed packs started them inside for the past 2 years and last year was the 1st time I had success and I know the ones that attracted butterflies and hummingbirds bloomed and also did what they said!!!!! Sofia may you rest in peace if you see Cassidy tell her to continue to watch over us and both of you look for your beautiful gardens!!!!!! Sorry about the ramble but Sofia and the admiral and your beautiful idea really got me motivated to try as well. Thank you, btw I am looking for the seedling packs and as soon as I find I will post a pick for you!!!!! thanks you again

What a wonderful story. I think some how the spirit of your beloved pet was transferred to that butterfly so that it could let you know all was well over the rainbow bridge. Butterfly bushes are aptly named to attract them. Alyssum, aster, bee balm, delphinium, and there are actual butterfly garden kits you buy on the internet. Lots of garden books on the subject too. Good luck with Sofia's garden.

What a wonderful idea. Butterflies are attracted to red, yellow, pink and purple flowers. Zinnias come in all those colors and are easy to grow. Plant swamp milkweed and orange butterfly weed for monarchs.
