Kathleen....Lift the ball of roots and dirt with a small shovel or garden tool. You can split now. I would just go ahead and plant in the dirt where I want immediately.
Hello Kathleen! I don't think you need to soak the splits when you are dividing them. The best thing would be to split them and plant them immediately. I have never soaked my iris when I divided them. I had my new planting area ready and just placed the divided plants into the dirt, covered them, and watered them. I cut the leaves down to about 2 -3 inches high before I dig them out to divide. It makes them easier to handle. They will grow back in the spring but you may not get flowers for a year or two until they are fully established.

Iris can be split and transplanted after they bloom, so now should be a great time to do it. And if you break any small pieces of corm off, just plant those too.
They root very easily so be sure and pick up all of the pieces. If you don’t they will root where they drop.
