How much should you prune endless hydrangeas?
How much, if at all, should you prune hydrangeas after the winter frost has past? Some say not to prune at all, some say prune all the way down. I would like to encourage maximum blooms. Mine are in zone 7, have been established for 4 years but do not have a lotof blooms year to year. Advise please!!! Thank you!!!

Certain types of hydrangeas bloom on old wood (no pruning) and other types bloom on new wood (prune down). Look up the hydrangea on Google before you prune.
I just purchased Bobo Hydrangeas and the label says they bloom on new wood. I called my garden guy and he said let them alone and that new growth would come in late spring and they would bloom from that. I was ready to cut them to the ground!! I'm glad I checked first. Mopheads seem to do well on old wood, so it is a real education to learn about hydrangeas.
There are so many Hybrids out--and you have some that need pruning--others do not--some prune to old wood--some not. Call you local garden Center--tell them type and do what they say best is all I can say without seeing it ! I grow the old MopHeads---did you know that Hydrangeas are usually called "Doorstep Plant" in the South? If you notice, especially driving in older neighborhoods they are planted on either side of the steps leading to front door. Friend told me that--years ago--I look for it now --it's true !
