I am wanting to know if my lavender plant I had in the ground will survive zone 6a through the winter? And what can I do to protect it?

In ground it should be ok. It will die off on top, but pop back up in the spring.
Mine are in the ground and they come back every year
I live in zone 8 and my lavender survives the winters. Maybe you can cover it with straw.
Make sure you cover the soil with mulch and if temperatures get horrible you can always cover it. Lavender is a pretty strong plant and you shouldn't have any problems with it as they go doormat over winter, like hibernate.
There are even lavender farms in Colorado and their plants thrive one season after the next.
Yes, I would think in zone 6 it would do fine. I've grown them in zone 4 in a protected south side of house.
