How big is the space you have to work with? I would go with a few anchor type plants and fill in with marigolds and snap dragons or vincas. Then a layer of nice mulch. Easy, quick, cheap, instant gratification and as long as it is properly watered will last long enough for you to sell the house.
Large, tall plants should be in the back and medium to small in the front. Pick a color pallet that coordinates together - purple, red and yellow look great together.
