Red poppies, black eyed Susan, cosmos. You can buy a mixture of seeds in a can that has many different kinds that make a beautiful show.
Google plants that are native to your area. Do perennials with a few annuals. Butterfly weed, butterfly bush, coneflowers, sunflowers, Huechera, milkweed, etc. Do NOT use chemicals. They are poison to birds, bees and butterflies.
There a plants that specifically attract butterflies...they are actually named "butterfly plants!" And any plant that blooms will attract bees if there are any hives in the area. But know that in urban areas, there are not many bees!
Head to a feed store and ask what wildflowers grow in your zone. Plant those. Don't forget to water as needed. If you are building the garden (raised bed or something) use a good potting soil and mulch. Don't forget to plan a watering station of some kind, too. Almost anything will do. But you have to keep it clean to prevent disease and mosquito populations. We have a large koi pond and the lily pads are covered with bees getting a drink almost all summer long.
Just be aware that butterfly plants are considered invasive. They need to be cut down every year and grow big fast.
Miracle Grow is OK, the chemicals for weeds are not.
Miracle grow is fine, it is the pesticides and herbicides that are not.
