My lovely new hydrangeas aren't so lovely anymore. How to save them?

Of course I expected the blooms to fade and die, but the leaves have become brittle and I fear the plant is doomed. I gave them about 1/4-1/2 c water daily, they are in gallon pots, I'd had them on the kitchen island with adequate indoor light. I went away for ten days and a friend watered them modestly as far as I know. Can anything save them, they were both beautiful and expensive.

They may need to be planted in the ground. These are outside plants. Don't do well inside.

I have a hydrangea that blooms every year. It has an extensive root system. My guess is they've outgrown those pots. Transplant them to a sunny location where they have room to grow.

I've already moved them to my main flower bed, added rich fresh organic soil, pray for them - smile
