Asking for suggestions... What seeds do you recommend this year? Any new varieties? I have my Living Ledge Seedies all ready to go. Let me know soon, I'm itching to dig. Thanks in advance!

Try red Russian Kale. I learned that they will even grow late in the fall.

Most seed packets include this information on the back of the packet for your zone (area). Note some plants do not transplant well so either hold off and plant directly as recommended or start a container garden.

I keep leafy veggies going all year by growing them inside. I believe there is a way to eat just the tops of pea plants. If you get a chance you might want to google it. Good luck with your new plants!

I live in zone 4. My Rule of thumb is never plant in the ground before Memorial day. That would mean don't start seeds before April 20.

@Lynn I'm in Johnson City, NY, Zone 5, but I like to get a jump on edibles. Just wondering what everyone is growing that is new this year.

This past weekend, I planted Hungarian Blue Breadseed Poppys outside and Historic Pansies in an egg carton in my kitchen bay window. Today I will start the seeds indoors for the Black-Eyed Susan vine. It has been 65 degrees and sunny here in Oregon and trees are flowering and buds are bursting...extremely mild winter. I am also planting seeds today of Brandywine (Sudduth's strain) tomatoes, Mortgage Lifter (Halladay's) tomatoes, Mantilia lettuce, Chocolate Beauty Peppers,,,which are all new to me this year. Purchased through Seed Savers.org. I only purchase heirloom varieties. In Oregon we have Territorial Seeds, Abundance Seeds and what I call "a seed apothecary", Nichols Nursery in Albany, Oregon...wonderful to scoop the seeds from the bins! I have great success in my garden and mulch every year. Love to garden!

@TK Your super lucky. It's won't be 65 here until June! Thanks for all of the suggestions - they are great! I think I will try the mantilia lettuce and chocolate beauty peppers. Thanks for the link too for seed savers.

Plant what you like to eat. Me, I'd be seeking out seed for some of the gorgeous colored cauliflower—green, orange, purple—I've been having lately.

Seeds need warmth to germinate. Can't see much success if you are using the picture window you have shown. I would p[lant things that can germinate in cold, and early, like lettuce, spinach, kale. Those are successful with cooler germination and window light. It is very hard to get plants going for a garden with window light.

Thanks. I'm a fairly seasoned gardener, 30+ years looking for new suggestions of new varieties of seeds. I have had no issues with starting seeds in a sunny window end of Feb, early March for the past 15 years. Thanks again.

Oh-h-h. Hey, Crissy, check out this book: Eating on the Wild Side, by Jo Robinson. It tells the most nutritious varieties of vegetables!! For example, purple carrots. She has done tons of research. You will love it and refer to it often!
