I like astilbe (here in Michigan) it likes moist, rich soil in shady areas and has pretty spiky flowers, though for only a short bloom season. I also like hosta, and heuchera (coral bells) that come with pretty variegated foliage. These are all easy to grow (except for the deer and slugs eventually getting to the hostas). There are some ground covers that thrive in the shade but be careful with them as they are invasive. Lily of the valley takes over and other groundcovers choke out all other perennials except those weeds you don't want that peek through.
You can also do colorful coleus and elephant ears for drama. If you are too far north, like me, you dig up the bulbs and replant each spring. I am doing them in a huge half barrel planter this year. Just waiting for rain and cool weather to go away.
Check out native wildflowers that like shade. n Missouri, wild phlox, geranium, solomon seal, ginger, bloodroot , columbine, aster to name a few. Go on line to the local wildflower group or conservation department. After the first year, native plants take almost no care, give lovely flowers and food for bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds.
