I want some color in my flower beds in the mountains ... but the deer seem to love everything we plant. Perennials would be great, but colorful annuals would also work. Help!!!

I have been trying to find plants for 28 years. The deer won. I am going to follow this post to see if there is an answer. Good luck.

I have a fight with deet ever year. I have some luck with human hair sprinkled around (a lot) I also have started experimenting with peppermint spray...which is working right now for my lillies. Just find recipes on line and try till you find what works best....good luck

Love deer ... but don’t love them eating my flowers. My hairdresser will probably be glad to save hair for me to use. Thanks for the advice.

I planted Foxgloves (a perennial that is poisonous to animals) and the deer have not touched them. I also planted hosta and sunflowers which were quickly consumed by the deer and squirrels...ugghhh. I have also grated up bar soap(Lever) and sprinkled it around my hosta and it is finally beginning to grow again. So far, so good. Good luck!

I am going to try the soap fix! That will be a good place to start. Have never planted foxglove but I like them and am glad to know they are perennials. Thanks for your input.

Some people have planted sage, the deer don't seem to care for that.

    Hi jwe,

Someone suggested human hair from a hairdresser.

If this is for flowers only, it should be ok...if veges I would rethink that choice.

I would hesitate (if growing veges) to use that because hair at a hairdressers has usually been treated with chemicals and dyes for as many processes as you can think of and see.

Thank you - good to know, especially for others who are reading answers as well. I don’t grow veggies here in the mtns. ... just flowers.

Two sayings : First if deer are hungry enough they'll eat most anything . Second , shoot them . In reality , a very few plants are deer "resistant" . Many lists exist on Extension Services web sites . Sprays often need to be applied more than once and often at temps above freezing , a problem here in Maine winters when deer are munching !

I’m finding that out - deer really do enjoy just about anything!

That’s an excellent question JWE-to consider this before planting!

It was one of my exam questions. Here’s a very helpful publication that can offer the homeowner comprehensive detailing that might aid in making the right choices before planting. Regional differences in deer species and plants could apply.

Preventive deterrent by plant/ landscaping choices could offer deer resistance

What a website! Thank you so much for sharing. We have at least planted a few things that are better than others to keep deer from dining on them. Again, many thanks!
