What are some low maintenance, sun loving, compact shrubs for zone 5?

We had spirea planted in this area but they were too big and were constantly growing and hanging over the sidewalk. The area is approximately 4 feet wide by 20 feet in length.

that is because they are supposed to be pruned hard before the growing season and after they finish flowering.

I pruned on a regular basis and even pruned them almost to the ground in earmy spring. They came back less woody which meant the heavy flowers then drooped. I had a love hate relationship with them for 11 years and last fall the hate won. We pulled them out.

I love boxwood! Slow growing, sun loving and very, very green!

I love boxwoods too. I have several already in the front yard so I was looking for something different. If all else fails I will go get more:)
