It may depend on your planting zone and weather conditions in my zone 7 I find begonias, geraniums the wave petunias do not disappoint!

I have always had wonderful luck with Dahlias, Zinnias and Begonias. They start rather small, but grow to a nice full shrub with abundant blooms for the entire season.

Go to your local nursery and see what they are planting since they only stock plants that thrive in your area. They will also be able to tell you how to care for them.

I have several hosta in pots. They stay pretty and green all summer and through the fall, with long spaths with small purple flowers on them. Once the first frost hits, they die out and the pots look empty, then in the spring they start coming up again. You can thin them out at that time, or leave them. Also Angelonia Is a nice flower with lots of greenery and flowers ( comes in purple, pink and white). Mexican heather is another annual you can put in a pot. You will only need one per pot.
