Robin: I live in Houston --- and for shady areas... I swear by caladiums! ...color and no upkeep. (You can buy them in bulk at Sam's Club)
For hot sunny areas, try pentas. They boom for me (Tampa, FL.) year around - - - especially if they are trimmed back every few months. I have a beautiful red one that has been in the same spot for 3 years now and it looks healthy as can be.

I have year round color and they draw many Butterflies, numerous Hummingbird varieties,Songbirds,Bees and other beneficial bugs like Green Lacewing & Pirate. I buy Live Lady bugs,Nematodes and Praying Mantis Egg cases to add to the garden it helps keep pest bugs(Aphids,Mites) away from my edible plants/veggies.
