If you are in Arizona, my advice is to highlight the area with xeriscaping instead of annual flowers. Most succulents have gorgeous blooms at least once a year, naturally with very little water and extreme heat.

I’m in New York, so I don’t know about your zone, but I have a clematis that’s climbing up mine his year. Last year I started it, and it didn’t look like it took, but this year its looking great. Good Luck!!

according to tree experts it’s not a good idea to planr flowers around the trunks of trees. Typically, the flowers need more water than the trees and ends up rotting the tree roots. So nothing that needs more water than your trees roots.

how about succulents ? you can buy flats of mixed ones or individual plants of one kind. Some flower others do not. They love the sum and heat.. One other plant you might try is day lilies.. they grow everywhere. I'd plant 4-5 small clumps mid point between the tree and border of rocks.. They multiply and would fill in
